The Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation is always looking for areas
in which we can "Lengthen our Stride" in providing
service and caring for these wonderful children and their
families.
Camp Cartwheel is currently funded for approximately 150
children for one week. With additional funding, we could provide
Camp Cartwheel for more children and expand the length of the
program. We are currently exploring possible opportunities to
acquire our own land to accommodate more campers and host our
family retreats. Donations from you and other generous supporters
will assure we can meet the needs of our children and their
families.
PROJECT A.R.K.
“STEPPING INTO TOMORROW” LIFE PROGRAM
At the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation, we help the children
of today and tomorrow but our focus must grow to help these
children in the future. Over 80% of our kids with cancer are being
cured however diagnoses have increased, and so have long term side
effects on our children and their families.
Our future goal is to establish a quality of life assessment
and fulfillment program, “Stepping Into Tomorrow”, to ensure
that our children who have struggled and survived the challenges
of a critical disease are given an opportunity to succeed in every
aspect of life. Presently in the U.S., there are over 250,000
childhood cancer survivors with one in every 1000 people a
childhood cancer survivor.
Unfortunately, two thirds of survivors will experience at least
one late affects, while one in four will experience a life
threatening late effect. All cancers and life threatening
illnesses place a stress on the family and the child that often
leads to post-traumatic stress such a depression, anxiety, and
social withdrawal, occurring during therapy or long afterward.
Often each family or child will need psychological therapy at some
time. Patients must often face disfigurement such as limb
amputation scarring, permanent hair loss, loss of sight, hearing,
stamina, learning difficulties and growth failure all due to
cancer or therapy for their disease. Secondary effects are growing
as well such as instances of cardiac failure, strokes, immune
disorders, secondary carcinomas, dental and skeletal problems,
obesity, problems with learning, stunted growth, infertility and
muscular weakness.
Because of this, it is our responsibility to offer guidance and
hope to our courageous children who have survived a life
threatening disease. “Stepping Into Tomorrow” will include the
following survivor tools for life:
